Product description

Drug Title

Aleve (Naproxen)

Drug Uses

Aleve is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that is used in the treatment of inflammation, joint pains and fever.

Mode of Application

The best way to take is as recommended by your doctor. You may also check dosage instructions on the product label. The pill is available in an extended release form as well as an enteric coated one. Do not crush or chew these pills. These are to be taken whole with a glass of water.

If you are using an oral suspension form, then shake it well before use and measure the dose exactly with a measuring device (marked measuring spoon).

Do not use it for a longer period of time than what is recommended or prescribed.

Drug Class & Mechanism

Aleve is an NSAID that blocks the enzymes that produce prostaglandins, chemicals that are responsible for pain, fever and inflammation. As a result, it reduces pain, inflammation and fever.

Missed Dosage

At times, Aleve is prescribed on a temporary basis as and when required. However, if you are on a regular dosage and miss a dose of Aleve, then you may take it as soon as you remember and adjust the remaining doses accordingly. However, if it is nearly time for the next dose then you may skip this dose and continue with the regular dosage. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed dose.

Storage

Store it at room temperature in an air tight container protecting it from direct exposure to light, heat and moisture.

Precautions

Using over the counter medication for cold, fever and inflammation without consulting your doctor is not recommended.

Medications similar to Aleve can contain aspirin, ibuprofen, or ketoprofen and it can lead to an overdose of the medication in the body.

Do not consume alcohol while taking Aleve as it increases the risk of stomach bleeding.

Aleve also increases the sensitivity of the skin to sunlight and you must avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight. If you are venturing out then wear protective clothing or use good sunscreen.

Side Effects

The most common side effects of Aleve are rashes on the skin, a ringing sensation in the ears, headaches, dizziness, stomach pain, drowsiness, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, shortness of breath, heartburn and fluid retention.

Do not use Aleve if you are allergic to NSAIDs.

Aleve can also cause stomach bleeding, intestinal bleeding and ulcers which do not give any symptoms other than black tarry stools, weakness and dizziness.

Aleve should not be taken during pregnancy.
