DRUG TITLE
Protonix (Pantoprazole)
APPLICATION
Protonix is a proton pump inhibitor which is prescribed for the treatment of severe inflammation and erosive esophagitis which is caused due to GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). However, this drug is only recommended for short term treatment (7-10 days) of these symptoms. In some cases, it is also prescribed for Zollinger–Ellison syndrome and similar conditions.
MODE OF APPLICATION
Protonix may be taken during meals or after it. Take medication as a whole, not chewed. If you are taking antacids you may continue to do so.
THE MECHANISM OF ACTION
Protonix is a member of the "proton pump inhibitor" class of acid blockers, which include Aciphex, Nexium, Prilosec, and Prevacid.
Protonix blocks the production of stomach acid. It is prescribed to treat a condition called erosive esophagitis caused by back flow of stomach acid (gastroesophageal reflux disease). Later, it can be prescribed to maintain healing and prevent recurrence. It is also used to treat conditions for which there is a constant overproduction of stomach acid such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
MISSED DOSE
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If this occurred while taking your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Never take two doses at once.
STORAGE
Protonix is stored at a temperature of 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees C). No long-term keeping at temperatures between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 ° and 30 ° C) is allowed. Keep away from heat, moisture and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Protonix out of children and away from pets.
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES
If Protonix gives an allergic reaction, you cannot feel.
Protonix is rare, but cause side effects, including severe allergic reaction, severe swelling of the face and neck, eye damage, dangerous skin reactions, and inflammation of the pancreas. Contact your doctor immediately if you begin to experience difficulty breathing or swallowing, or if you begin to develop blisters, or peeling skin.

- ampicillin (Omnipen)
- iron
- ketoconazole (Nizoral)
- warfarin (Coumadn)
SIDE EFFECTS
Side effects cannot be anticipated. Only a doctor can determine if is safe for you to receive Protonix.
Other side effects:
- abdominal pain;
- belching;
- diarrhea;
- gases;
- headache;
- insomnia;
- nausea;
- rash;
- vomiting.
